The Necessary Stage

The Necessary Stage's Theatre for Youth Branch was set up in 1992 by Artistic Director Alvin Tan for theatre work with, and for young people. The programmes of this branch include short plays for school assemblies, interactive Theatre-In-Education, Drama-In-Education programmes and workshops. Long-term processual drama programmes were introduced into schools during curriculum time in 1999. All these programmes are presented in conjunction with the National Arts Council's Arts Education Programme. Since 1992, The Necessary Stage has performed to more than 500,000 students, one of the largest outreach for English theatre.
The Branch also believes strongly in, and welcomes partnerships with other sectors in society to achieve holistic outcomes for our programmes. The Branch was re-named Theatre for Youth and Community in 2001 to reflect the partnerships and programmes conducted with other VWOs and NGOs in Singapore.
